This announcement is for one internship located in the Engineering Directorate, Systems Engineering and Engineering Methods Branch at NASA Langley Research Center. The work concerns professional engineering and physical science equipment development that advance the state of the art. Typical work assignments appear below. Learn more about this agency Responsibilities - Supports senior branch members in performance of a variety of statistical engineering studies spanning numerous projects primarily within the NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate. - Receives advanced training through classroom and on-the-job instruction to provide a more thorough understanding of engineering principles, analysis, methodologies, and discipline-related research. - Independently carries out both assigned work activities and self-identified activities related to position. - Functions in an assistant capacity, typically working with senior staff members, carrying out predetermined phases of the assignments to provide broad exposure to the organization's work activities. - Researches and analyzes data, issues, and information that support project recommendations or the work assignments of higher-grade specialists. - Prepares well-researched and logically organized presentation related to work assignments. Presents facts, issues and positions that convey the intended information with the appropriate diplomacy and emphasis. S. citizen or national - Enrolled/accepted in an accredited educational institution - Pursuing a degree - Maintain enrollment at least half time as defined by the institution - Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.9 on a 4.0 scale Qualifications Starting GS grade levels are determined by education level: GS-7: Accepted into a master's or juris doctor program OR in the first year of a master's or juris doctor program. Starting salary - $47,264.00 GS-9: Completed one academic year of a master's or juris doctor program OR accepted into a doctorate program OR in the first year of a doctorate program. Starting salary - $57,809.00 GS-11: Completed one year of doctorate-level study. Starting salary - 62,365.00 Education To be eligible for this position, you must be pursuing a degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, OR Aerospace Engineering at an accredited educational institution. Degrees in engineering technology are not qualifying for this position. Engineering degrees must be from a college or university school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. To find out if a degree meets this requirement, go to . Additional information Pathways internships last the duration of your pursuit of your degree. Students who are local will usually work and go to school simultaneously. Students who attend college out of state will usually work on breaks. In either case, there is a minimum of 640 work hours that must be attained either prior to or upon completion of coursework for the student's degree. Once the student completes the degree requirements they may be converted to a civil service position within 120 days from that date, but in order to participate/be eligible for a Pathways internship, you must remain in school. Interns may be promoted to higher grades based on the amount of education completed and acceptable performance. However, promotions are not guaranteed. You must have at least one academic year of study remaining before completing degree requirements. You will be expected to comply with Center Pathway policies. You will only be considered for the highest grade for which you qualify. You will serve a trial period for the duration of the Intern appointment. Interns may be considered for conversion to a term or permanent appointment within 120 days of completing degree requirements provided they: - Successfully completed an academic course of study with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.9 (on a 4.0 scale); - Complete a minimum of 640 hours of work experience before completing degree requirements; - Meet the qualification requirements for the position to which they are converted; and - Maintain acceptable performance. Eligibility for conversion does not guarantee that NASA will offer conversion. At NASA, term appointments last from one to six years. If an Intern is converted to a term appointment, they may later be converted to a permanent appointment without competing. The Intern may be converted to an Aerospace Engineer with promotion potential to the GS-13 level. You must meet eligibility requirements by the closing date of this announcement. You will only be considered for the highest grade for which you qualify. As a condition of employment, male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must certify that they have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from having to do so under the Selective Service Law.
