Sensitive Position No Job Description Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.

The Director of Marketing and College Relations will promote college programs and solidify public relations throughout the service area and beyond. This position reports directly to Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness & Transformation and is an active participant in the college's strategic priorities and continuous improvement efforts, and works collaboratively with faculty, staff and students to further the mission of Virginia Peninsula Community College. In consultation with the leadership from Academic Affairs, Student Enrollment, and Workforce Development, the Director of Marketing and College Relations plans, leads, and implements college-wide strategic marketing of all educational and training programs. This position works with Deans and Directors to promote our college faculty and instructors, our students, community partnerships, and our student and alumni success.

Strategic Marketing and Communications Planning

  • Responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive and integrated marketing strategies to advance the college's mission, brand the institution, and support enrollment goals.
  • Has full responsibility for visionary leadership in marketing, public relations, crisis management messaging, research-based messaging, and is the branding expertise for the College.
  • Oversee all marketing and communication efforts including the development and implementation of a strategic marketing and branding plan.
  • Provide leadership, counsel, and support on the planning, design, and production of key marketing and advertising for the college.
  • Manage all college-wide marketing and communication activities, especially media relations; digital communication and social media; advertising placements, including print, digital, broadcast, and other formats that will ensure a cost-effective strategy to reach prospective students, donors and other targeted constituencies.
  • Serve as the chief college information officer and responds to all inquiries from the press in collaboration with the College President and the President's Chief of Staff
  • Design, lead and manage marketing, public relations, and communication efforts to increase brand awareness throughout the service area and effectively reach and engage diverse populations.
  • Povides oversite of the Marketing and Communication budget, allocating scarce resources effectively, and presenting quarterly reports that articulate a return on investment for marketing campaigns.
  • Provides guidance, direction, and coaching to Marketing and Communication staff that is aligned with the colleges culture of excellence.
  • Serves as the point of contact for the college's FOIA requests. College and Community Engagement
    • Develop and maintain consistent communication and visibility with the College's academic and workforce leaders, ensuring broad awareness of our academic and workforce programs and events.
    • Oversee, present, and ensure the broad promotion of high-profile college-sponsored events, including but not limited to donor events, alumni, events, industry co-sponsored events, campus visits from local legislatures and dignitaries, employee and retiree engagement events, commencement, convocation, and student completion and recognition events.
    • Work collaboratively with the campus community to achieve the college's strategic objectives. Supervise and manage the marketing office.
    • Promote the achievements of administration, faculty, students and staff to enhance the college image.
    • Coordinate all writing, photography, editing and other staff activities that directly support the development, production and distribution of the College's marketing and communication products. Project Management
      • Oversee projects and to ensure cohesive output of strategic initiatives, including staffing workload prioritization, allocation of resources, and development of measurable work plans.
      • Supervise the creation of marketing and promotional materials (brochures, flyers, cards, mailings, advertisements, commercials, posters, website, etc.)
      • Coordinate graphic design work and written content with internal stakeholders (faculty, staff, and students) and external contractors (alumni, high school partners, workforce partners) for the development of advertising materials, publications, the college website, and social media.
      • Function as the project manager for the development of college-oriented publications, such as an annual report, compliance reporting, strategic planning materials, commencement documentation, and special requests from the Office of the President. Leadership and Supervision
        • Lead the daily operations of the Marketing and Communications department, supervise its staff.
        • Independently resolve issues related to departmental scope of work, efficiency, and functionality. Seek assistance from peers.
        • Remains aware of current priorities and long-term goals to coordinate the calendar in the most effective and productive manner, communicate important calendar shifts, and collect information prior to meetings.
        • Designs and drives the organizational rhythm, ensuring the team is focused on the highest priority topics at the right time.
        • Promote a culture of high performance, high ethics, and continuous improvement by determining key performance indicators and how to measure team performance through the annual evaluation process.
        • Administrative responsibilities include the management of contracts, managing budgets, and timelines, drafting communications, documentation, and presentations on behalf of the VP, strategically scheduling meetings, preparing meeting agendas, follow-up documentation, and action plans.           • Special assignments as required from the President or Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness and Transformation and other college leadership. Special Assignments May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor. KSA's/Required Qualifications Degree Requirements
            • Master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in communication, marketing, or related field. Minimum Qualifications
              • Five (5) years of experience in communication, public relations, marketing, or related field.
              • Five (5) Years of experience supervising staff including leading, developing, and managing personnel.
              • Demonstrated proficiency in writing, editing, and publishing content for web, social media, print, marketing and internal communications.
              • Proven ability to establish and implement cohesive marketing, communication and public relations strategies and plans.
              • Proven ability to effectively build, engage, and maintain an audience on social media to promote the college and complement marketing efforts.
              • Proven ability to assess project requirements, give and receive feedback, provide creative solutions, and present a professional, finished product within a deadline.
              • Ability to work independently as well as within a team and to manage multiple large complex projects.
              • Ability to use independent judgment and to gather, manage, and impart information to the media and various other internal and external audiences.
              • Experience developing effective web pages and digital photography/photo editing.
              • Strong, effective organizational and interpersonal skills.
              • Excellent speaking skills with experience communicating to a diverse audience.
              • Outstanding leadership, interpersonal communication, and community relations skills and the ability to communicate and work effectively within a diverse community.
              • Experience communicating with the press and other media. Preferred Qualifications
                • Knowledge and understanding of current trends in marketing and public relations, especially within the higher education environment.
