Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center is now hiring a
Certified Surgical Assistant or a RN First Assistant!
-Full Time and 2nd shift-
Up to $10,000 sign on bonus for qualified candidates!
Job Description:
Certified Surgical Assistant: The Certified Surgical Assistant
(CSA/CSFA) works as a 1st or 2nd assistant to the surgeon and under
the direction and supervision of that surgeon may perform specific
significant surgical tasks.
Qualification & Certification:
Required:
Graduate of CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health
Education Programs) accredited Surgical Assistant Program
required.
Graduate of medical school (foreign or domestic) may be substituted
for education if currently certified or Credentialed as a Surgical
Assistant or Surgical First Assistant issued by the National Board
of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, or the National
Commission for Certification of Surgical Assistants or their
successors in lieu of CAAHEP Surgical Assistant Program.
All current Virginia SAs and applicants must be certified and
licensed through the Virginia Board of Medicine

RN First Assistant: The RNFA is a perioperative registered nurse
who works in collaboration with the surgeon and health care team
members to achieve optimal patient outcomes. The RNFA must have
acquired the necessary knowledge, judgment, and skills specific to
the expanded role of RNFA clinical practice. Intraoperatively, the
RNFA practices at the direction of the surgeon and does not
concurrently function as a scrub nurse
Associates Degree in Nursing. Bachelors of Nursing preferred.
Previous experience preferred.
Registered Nurse licensed in the state of Virginian. Certified
Registered Nurse First Assistant required. If not Certified RNFA at
time of hire, must obtain certification within 18 months of
hire.
BLS; ACLS within 1 year.
New Hire Education Requirement: All Registered Nurses who do not
have their BSN will be required to sign a BSN Agreement committing
to successfully obtain their BSN within 5 years of hire.

Job Summary
The Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA/CSFA) works as a 1st or 2nd
assistant to the surgeon and under the direction and supervision of
that surgeon may perform specific significant surgical tasks.
Anticipating the needs of the surgical team, the Certified Surgical
Assistant assists the surgeon with tasks such as selecting
equipment, set up of various tables and positioning equipment,
providing retraction for visualization of surgical site,
cauterization of bleeding vessels, suturing and closure of
incision, instillation of medications, application of surgical
dressings, splints, and casts.
The surgical assistant has responsibilities before, during and
after the surgical procedure. The surgical assistant uses effective
interdisciplinary communication to facilitate optimal patient
outcomes.
