Job Description:

Science Systems and Applications Inc. (SSAI) is seeking an individual with experience in remote sensing, scientific programming, and data analysis to support the NASA SABER mission by conducting new data analyses and generating additional products for the scientific community. The individual will be working with the SABER PI to continue to explore the rich long-term data set of upper atmosphere measurements collected over more than twenty years from the SABER instrument on the TIMED satellite. The individual will be working on algorithm development that makes use of the SABER measurements in ten infrared channels to characterize the data and derive information for studies of the energy budget and chemistry of the mesosphere and thermosphere. The individual will also document important research findings through presentations at conferences and peer-reviewed publications. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who can work independently in collaboration with the SABER PI and can translate research ideas into code for data analysis and visualization. This individual will also play a key role in supporting the SABER user community by maintaining automated support for data posted at SpaceWeather.com, updating derived data sets posted at the SABER data processing web site, and providing support customized data products as requested. Additional information about the SABER project is available at http://saber.gats-inc.com and the TIMED satellite site, http://www.timed.jhuapl.edu/WWW/index.php.Required Qualifications:MS degree in Atmospheric Science, Physical Science, or related field. and three (3) or more years of experience in scientific data analysis or equivalent combination of education and experience.Demonstrated knowledge of statistical data analysis. Proficiency in scientific programming. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to meet NASA's background investigation requirements for IT and physical access to NASA facilities.Desired Qualifications: Experience using Python, IDL, and Fortran programming.Experience in batch data processing and automation.Experience working in a team-oriented, science environment.EOE, including disability/vetsPhysical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
