Postdoctoral Research Scholar

Uncertainty Quantification in Next-Generation Qualification and Certification for Additive Manufacturing

The National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) has an immediate opening for a Research Scholar to join a multidisciplinary team investigating qualification and certification (Q&C) of additively manufactured metallic materials. The selected candidate will work on development of next-generation computational materials-based capabilities for Q&C of additively manufactured and post-processed metallic materials. The research will strive to integrate an Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) capability within a Process-Structure-Property (PSP) framework. Processing parameters will be linked to scatter in fatigue performance by quantifying relevant uncertainties at multiple scales (e.g., measurement errors, melt pool morphology, natural variability in microstructure, defect formation) and propagating those uncertainties through PSP simulations.

The successful candidate will work with engineers and researchers in the Durability, Damage Tolerance and Reliability Branch at NASA's Langley Research Center located in Hampton, Virginia.

Key Requirements:

  • PhD or equivalent in relevant field, i.e., Computer Science, Materials Science, Mechanics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering
  • Programming skills (C++, Python)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong and independent work ethic
  • Ability to successfully complete a background investigation required to obtain a NASA badge
  • US citizenship or permanent resident status is a bona fide requirement

Desired Skills:

  • Previous work with any of the following NASA Software packages: SciFEN, MLMCpy, SROMpy, FEMERA, BINGO
  • Knowledge of computational materials simulation approaches, additive manufacturing processes, and/or uncertainty quantification methods for modeling and simulation
