Performs a variety of difficult and responsible paraprofessional
library duties for a branch library.
Examples of Work
Performs circulation desk duties using the library's automated
system. Deals directly with patrons to review patron blocks and
discuss ways to resolve them. Registers new borrowers. Advises
patrons concerning the library, its services, resources and
policies. Takes meeting room reservations. Assist patrons with
holds. Sorts returned books and other materials according to
classification system and returns them to designated holding
shelves for the pages to shelve. Runs daily Dynix holds reports and
prepares books for transit.
Answers inquiries of non-professional nature in person and on
the telephone and refers patrons requiring professional assistance
to the librarian; refers requests for materials not owned by the
branch to proper sources. Provides reader's advisory service to
patrons. Assists patrons in the use of the on-line public access
catalog, CD-Rom index and other sources to locate books and other
information. Assists patrons in the use of microform
reader/printer, photocopying machine and personal computer.
Conducts in-library and outreach programs for adults and
children such as library tours, video programs, story hours and
school visits. Prepares bulletin boards and displays promoting
library programs and resources.
Maintains a variety of records including files on periodicals
and various borrowing transactions. Assists in the preparation of a
variety of published materials including bibliographies. Reads
reviews of children's books and recommends purchase. Prepares
financial deposits. Participates in system-wide task forces and

and volunteer workers to perform their duties properly. Responsible
for the operation of the branch in the absence of the

Graduation from high school or successful completion of the GED;
college level courses in Library Science, literature or related
field of study preferred.
Minimum of one (1) year direct work experience in performing
paraprofessional library duties.
Knowledge of library principles, methods, materials, and
practices, general knowledge of reader interests and of books and
authors; ability to perform simple business math, keep accurate
records and handle money required; ability to perform light typing;
ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships
with fellow workers and library patrons.
Any acceptable combination of experience and education which
qualifies the applicant for this particular position may be
considered for the more specific requirements outlined above.
A criminal background check is required for this position.
Performs duties under the general supervision of the librarian.
Requires duties to be performed frequently on nights and weekends
as scheduled. Daily public contact. Requires lifting of light
