Operates one or more types of specialized, complex heavy duty
motorized and automotive equipment and one or more types of
motorized and automotive equipment and a variety of hand tools,
power tools and equipment in the construction, maintenance and
repair of the City's public works infrastructure.
Examples of Work
- Operates a variety of complex motorized equipment to include
cranes, dozers, milling machines, front end loaders (track),
backhoes, ditch masters, and paving machines.
- Operates a variety of hand tools to include shovels, rakes,
pick axes and string line trimmers.
- Inspects, services and performs minor repairs on automotive
- Assists in loading and unloading materials and cleaning up work
- Performs related duties as required.
Graduation from high school or successful completion of the GED
is preferred. Requires a minimum of five (5) years of experience
operating equipment as listed above;. Requires the ability to
demonstrate proficiency in the operating of equipment required;
ability to work independently and set and follow priorities;
ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships
with the general public and other personnel. General knowledge of
the occupational hazards and the safety precautions necessary to
the proper operation of automotive and motorized equipment and the
use of hand tools and equipment. Must possess a State of Virginia
Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or must possess a valid
State of Virginia Driver's License and obtain the CDL Class A
within 180 days of employment. Must have a satisfactory driving
record based on the City of Hampton's criteria. Any person offered
employment in this position shall be required to successfully pass
testing for controlled substances. Any person under consideration
for this position must successfully complete a Virginia Criminal
History Background check.
Performs duties under the general supervision of an assigned
supervisor; receives direction from crew leaders. Occasional
overtime, evening, weekend and holiday work is required. Incumbent
is subject to call-out and may be required to carry an electronic
signaling device which enables him/her to respond to emergency
situations. This is a non-exempt position.
