Performs skilled work in the layout, fabrication, application
and maintenance of traffic signs, barriers, guardrails, raised and
recessed pavement markers and traffic control lines on
Examples of Work
- Fabricates, installs, maintains and repairs all types of signs
and steel and wooden traffic barricades and guardrails to include
measurement, marking, drilling and driving poles into the
- Prepares paint for use in pavement marking equipment in
accordance with proper procedures.
- Operates heavy duty motorized pavement marking machinery and
applies paint stripping in accordance with engineering plans and
diagrams. Assists with traffic sign fabrication and installs,
maintains and repairs all types of traffic signs.
- Operates stake body and aerial lift trucks and a variety of
hand tools to include drills, measuring tapes, shovels and
heavy-duty hammers. Washes and cleans machines and equipment and
performs minor, routine maintenance on equipment.
- Assists in loading and unloading materials and equipment
weighing between 75 and 100 pounds. Fully setup temporary traffic
- Performs essential sign and pavement marking duties based on a
working knowledge of guidelines and procedural requirements of the
Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and the Virginia
Work Area Protection Manual.
- Performs other duties as required.
Graduation from high school or successful completion of the GED.
A minimum of one (1) year of traffic engineering work experience;
some experience in traffic maintenance work; some experience and/or
training in spray painting operations and in the operation of heavy
motorized equipment. Good knowledge of the general use of a variety
of hand tools used in sheet metal work, carpentry, mechanical work
or painting; working knowledge of the MUTCD Manual and the Virginia
Work Area Protection Manual; ability to follow oral and written
instructions; ability to read and interpret traffic engineering
prints and diagrams designed to guide the correct application of
pavement markings; ability to establish and maintain harmonious
working relationships with the general public and other personnel.
Must possess a State of Virginia Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
or a CDL instruction permit and obtain the CDL within 90 days of
employment. Must have a satisfactory driver's record based on the
City of Hampton's criteria. Any person offered employment with the
city in this position shall be required to successfully pass
testing for controlled substances. Any person offered employment
with the city in this position shall be required to successfully
complete a Virginia Criminal History Background Check.
Performs duties under the general supervision of an assigned
foreman; receives direction from team leaders. Occasional overtime
may be required. Duties may be performed in adverse weather
conditions. Must work in hazardous road conditions. This is a
