The Hampton University Department of School of Science invites
nominations and applications for Assistant Dean of the School of
Science beginning July 2022.
Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black
university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of
Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian
institution. The School of Science offers degrees in the
areas/departments of atmospheric and planetary sciences, biology,
chemistry and biochemistry, computer science, communicative and
speech disorders, marine and environmental science, mathematics,
physics and physical therapy.
Duties and Responsibilities
Hampton University is accepting applications for the Assistant Dean
position in the School of Science. Rank and compensation will be
commensurate with the qualifications of the candidate. All
disciplines within the Sciences are eligible. Research, teaching,
and outreach activity involving undergraduate and graduate students
is expected. The Assistant Dean will assist the Dean with school
processes on all matters of administration, including the
following: fundraising, budget preparation and implementation;
personnel matters including both faculty and non-faculty hiring,
promotion, and terminations; research program focus, evaluation,
and review; graduate program development; curriculum development
and review; and student support services within the school and
initiatives in a highly collaborative environment involving
department chairs, administrative assistants and faculty.
Perform general administrative functions on behalf of the Dean.
May assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the
Dean.
Represent science and lead special projects as assigned by the
Dean.
Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
Demonstrated record of research, scholarly, and/or creative
achievement to warrant tenure in an academic department in the
sciences.
Minimum three years of professional experience as a program
director, department chair, or in a university leadership
position.
Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication
skills.
Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.
Demonstrated computer skills.
Demonstrated organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to work with individuals and groups
representing a wide range of academic and administrative
interests.
Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.
Salary range for this position depends on experience
