Position Description: Computational Scientist- Fluid Dynamics



We are seeking candidates for the role of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) algorithm and software development in Hampton, Virginia office, supporting the Computational AeroSciences Branch at NASA Langley Research Center. This branch supports the development of the FUN3D software. FUN3D is a CFD suite of tools developed by NASA to study and develop new algorithms for unstructured grid fluid dynamic simulations spanning incompressible flow to hypersonic flow.


The position involves assisting the branch in areas of adjoint-based algorithm development and implementation for simulations based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes equations. The role includes developing, implementing, and evaluating of scale-resolving technologies for complex flows across the speed range. Source codes will be developed for multiarchitecture simulations ranging from desktop to exascale-class environments. The position also involves the development of documentation in the form of website instructions, tutorial content, and user manuals. Travel will be required for communicating results and progress.




Requirements:





  • MS or PhD in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent with in depth understanding of CFD algorithm development
  • Experience in high-fidelity simulation of complex flows
  • Demonstrated capabilities in software development in support of CFD algorithm implementation
  • Experience in High-Performance Computing, especially GPU acceleration to enhance computational efficiency
  • Experience in sensitivity analysis with multidisciplinary design optimization frameworks, such as OpenMDAO and MPhys
  • Strong written and verbal communications to support documentation and briefings
  • This position will be conditioned on ability to obtain NASA credentials and public trust background investigation for access to a federal facility and requires US citizenship or US Permanent Residency at minimum.
