We are currently looking to hire a skilled Materials Processing Technician to support advanced materials research activities at the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) in Hampton, VA. The position may require a combination of onsite and telework, so reliable transportation and internet connectivity are essential along with willingness and ability to accommodate a flexible work schedule.

Job Description:
The successful candidate will join a team of technicians and engineers supporting materials research on the TEAMS3 contract with the NASA Langley Advanced Materials and Processing Branch (AMPB). The team provides data to NASA researchers and collaborators on thermomechanical processing of materials using a wide variety of laboratory equipment and data acquisition systems.
Material processing techniques and equipment currently in use within AMPB includes: vacuum hot press, vacuum RF plasma spray, vacuum casting, atmospheric and vacuum heat treating furnaces, selective laser melting additive manufacturing system, electron beam freeform fabrication and welding system, plasma torch, vacuum bagging, and hydrogen torch systems. The team also supports the design of tooling and fixtures along with the fabrication of test specimens for mechanical testing and metallurgical analysis. The job requires working with hazardous materials and equipment in accordance with all applicable laboratory, state, and federal safety procedures and permits.

Education and Requirements:
High School Diploma required; Associate's degree in electrical/mechanical technology is desirable
5 years experience in directly comparable work is essential
Military veteran with relevant operational or maintenance experience is a plus
Requires a working knowledge of the fundamentals of industrial machinery and electromechanical systems including commonly used concepts, practices and procedures.
Relevant experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of mechanical, hydraulic, high vacuum, cryogenic equipment, high voltage electrical power, and electronic control and data acquisition systems is highly desirable.
Ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions and operating procedures; specialized instruction and training will be provided. After training, the candidate will be expected to work with minimal oversight in a team-based environment where time management and attention to safety and quality are critical.
Ability to effectively communicate and interface with internal and external customers, equipment suppliers, and service providers.
PC-literate and familiar with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word
Must thoroughly understand and diligently apply laboratory safety practices protecting personnel, equipment and facilities
Must demonstrate excellent communication skills, both oral and written
Ability to quickly adapt to dynamic work requirements and learn new disciplines
Must be a United States citizen or Permanent Resident
