YOU will perform routine and complex inspections on new
construction, buildings in progress and remodeled dwellings to
ensure conformity with the rules and regulations of the National
Electrical Code (NEC) and other city codes and regulations.
Examples of Work
* Analyzes routine and complex electrical installations in field
inspections. Performs rough-in and final inspections of electrical
installations in one and two family dwellings, commercial, and
industrial buildings. Inspects new and existing installations of
electrical wires, apparatus, and equipment to insure conformity
with the code regulating such installations. Checks plans and
regulations pertaining to such installations. Checks plans and
specifications of proposed electrical installations.
* Investigates complaints received from citizens, Fire Department,
and Health Department officials pertaining to National Electrical
Code violations. Submits reports of violations and issues written
or verbal orders for correction of same. Makes re-inspection of
premises to determine correction of violations.
* Prepares daily reports of inspections. Logs all inspections on a
daily basis and notifies contractor of any code violations.
Notifies electrical company to connect electrical service when
needed. Schedules appointments with contractors and homeowners for
electrical inspection. Makes investigations and reports of
accidents and fires reported to have been of electrical origin.
* Assists with training classes for Electrical Inspector Trainees.
Instructs Trainees in the proper methods and procedures of
electrical inspection. Conducts cross-training classes for other
inspectors (i.e., plumbing and mechanical inspector, building and
codes compliance inspectors). Teaches other inspectors the proper
techniques of National Electrical Code enforcement.
* Performs other related duties as required
Qualifications
Graduation from high school or successful completion of the GED;
some technical, vocational, or trade school training in electrical
installation, maintenance, and repair preferred.
Three (3) years direct work experience in electrical installation,
maintenance, and repair or considerable experience as an Electrical
inspector. Required to possess a One & Two Family Electrical
Inspector Certification and possess or obtain an Electrical General
certification within three (3) years of date of employment in
accordance with the requirements of the Virginia Department of
Housing & Community Development (VDHCD). Must possess a journeyman
electrician's license.
Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, and techniques of
the electrical trade at the journeyman level; considerable
knowledge of building code regulations pertaining to electrical
regulations; ability to locate defects and hazards in new and
existing installations; ability to read plans and specifications,
and recognize deviations from such plans in the field which work is
in process; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in
writing; ability to establish and maintain harmonious working
relationships with contractors, property owners, and the general
public.
Must possess a valid driver's license as issued and must have a
satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's
criteria. Any person offered employment in this position shall be
required to successfully pass testing for controlled substances and
a criminal background check prior to any offer of employment or
promotion.
Features
Performs duties under the general supervision of the Inspection
Services Manager or designee who provides guidance, advice, and
assistance when necessary. Requires considerable field work with
the use of a city owned vehicle. Requires ability to work
independently, making judgments and decisions in the line of the
enforcement of electrical codes. Extensive contact with the
contractors, property owners and the general public; requires
patience and skill in dealing with citizens on points of law and
regulations that are not readily understood. Requires crawling
under houses, ascending multi-story building in a semi-finished
state, etc., to accomplish inspections. May be required to provide
assistance to the Emergency Operations Damage Assessment Team in
times of disaster. This is a non-exempt position.
